I am an artist and designer with expertise in research, strategy, analysis, problem-solving, innovation, engagement, facilitating collaboration & project management. My practice is based on creative vision, collaboration, research and design which often leads to processes of storymaking. I am fascinated by how people create and share knowledge, stories and experiences – what they value and why. I aim to make the ephemeral and invisible tangible; to give shape and form to abstract knowledge and unfathomable experiences; and to allow us to perceive the world and our relationships to it anew.
I am Founder/Director of Proboscis and a freelance consultant, as well as Specialist Researcher in Art-Science (part time) at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. I am also a Research Associate of the Human Centred Computing research group at the University of Oxford, and a Research Affiliate of the Crucible Network at University of Cambridge.
In 1994 I founded Proboscis – a non-profit creative studio based in London, UK which I continue to co-direct. I have devised and led numerous transdisciplinary and cross-sector creative projects, working with funders and partners across the arts, business, academia, civil society and government. In 2005 Proboscis became the first artist-led organisation to be given “Independent Research Organisation” status by the UK Research Councils.
In 2019 I co-founded the transdisciplinary research group Manifest Data Lab at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London with Professor Tom Corby.
I was elected a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) in 2008 for my “contribution to community development through creative practice”. I have also been a Research Associate of Media@lse at the London School of Economics (2001-10); and an Honorary Research Associate of the Extreme Citizen Science research group at University College London (2014-18). I was a Research Fellow at the Royal College of Art (1998-2002); a Visiting Tutor in Design at Goldsmiths College, University of London (2007-10); and a Visiting Practitioner in Design at Central St Martins School of Art & Design (University of the Arts, London).
